Why Summer Heat Damages Your Roof

Summer is in full swing here in Charlottesville, and for most of us the extra heat means we turn the AC up higher, stay inside more, and take a few trips to the pool. But your roof may not be quite as lucky. Many roofs lack shade or protection from the direct sunlight that beats down on them day after day in the summertime, and that can quickly cause heat damage. Here’s why:

Why Heat Damage?

The main factor in heat damage is the ventilation of the roof. If the ventilation isn’t placed properly, or is not adequate for the size and shape of the roof, the combination of direct sunlight, high temperatures can cause trouble for your roof. Although roofs are designed to withstand high temperatures,  like people, roofs don’t perform quite as well when it’s hot. This is why adequate and properly placed ventilation is so important.

What is Ventilation?

Attic ventilation has 2 main components: intake vents and exhaust vents. They function exactly as they sound; the intake vents allow outside air to enter into your attic space and provide ventilation for the attic and the roof. The exhaust vents allow the air to escape from the space. These vents work together to create air circulation throughout your attic and roofing system, and prevent heat damage.

Blisters = Heat Damage

When proper ventilation isn’t present in your roofing system, it traps the heat and moisture inside your attic and roof, and can cause your roof to become superheated in the summer months.  Extreme temperatures can cause the asphalt in the shingles to soften, and pockets of moisture trapped within the asphalt begin to expand and blister. As these blisters bubble up, they cause the granules on  the shingle to pop off, and expose  the underlying material to direct sunlight. Over time, these blisters will continue to expand, and begin to impact the effectiveness of the shingles, leading to a shortened lifespan of the roof, as well as leaks and weather damage.

What Can I Do To Prevent Heat Damage?

As a homeowner the best thing you can do to protect your roof is to ensure that there is proper ventilation installed in your home and roofing system. Without proper ventilation heat damage is almost inevitable, so it is important to make sure everything is functioning well. Additionally, a routine roof inspection is an important preventative measure, because the earlier heat damage or a ventilation issue is caught, the easier the repair process will be.
