How Moss Affects Your Roof

Moss is a common reality in Roanoke, especially during the rainier seasons. While most of the time it remains unnoticed on the rocks and trees around us, when moss takes root on a roof, it becomes more problematic.

Moss grows in blankets, and it won’t die, or go away on its own. So when it begins to grow on a roof, the homeowner needs to take action quickly, in order to minimize the damage before it is too late. If moss is left alone on your roof, it will dig in, and eventually begin to lift the shingles off of your roof, making a total roof replacement necessary very quickly.

What Can You Do About Moss?

When moss is caught early, there are some steps  homeowners can take to safely remove the moss and restore their roof back to tip-top condition:

Step 1: Hose off and brush the moss loose

A great way to start the removal process is to carefully climb onto your roof with a hose, and spray the affected area with water. Then, use a scrub brush to gently remove the moss. It is important to scrub from the top down to avoid lifting the shingles off of your roof.

Note: do not use a pressure washer on the moss, the pressure of the water will damage your shingles and strip them of the granules. A gentle stream from a hose is the optimal method.

Step 2: Apply a cleaning solution to the roof

If the moss removal requires more intensity than the water and scrub brush, the next step is to apply a cleaning solution to the affected areas of your roof. Choose a cloudy day for this, as direct sunlight will cause the solution to evaporate before it has had enough time to work. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for whichever cleaner you choose, and be sure to wait the entire length of time recommended for the best results.

Note: Many cleaning solutions have the potential to discolor sidewalks, and damage plants surrounding your home, so it is a good idea to cover any areas where drips could occur.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully remove moss from most roofs. If during the moss removal process you notice shingle damage, whether from the moss or other causes, it is a good idea to schedule a professional roof inspection to assess the damage and provide a plan for repair.
