Why Chimneys Commonly Leak

No one enjoys finding a leak in their roof after a rainstorm comes through. However, not every leak stems from the roof. Many times it can be difficult to identify the source of a leaky roof, and if this is the case, it is important to remember that sometimes, the source isn’t the roof at all – it’s the chimney. Here are 3 common reasons why chimneys leak, and what homeowners can do about them.

Missing Chimney Cap

One of the most common reasons that chimneys leak is because they are missing a chimney cap. A chimney cap is a little cap that sits on top of the chimney to protect the opening from rainwater, and critters, getting inside. When the cap is missing, rain has a direct entrance into the chimney, and the rest of the home. Thankfully, a missing chimney cap is one of the most simple repairs we do. All that needs to be done is replace the cap.

Damaged Flashing

Chimney flashing is a piece of metal that wraps around the chimney at the point where the roof meets the chimney. It provides a seal that prevents water from entering, and protects the chimney and roof from water damage. When the flashing becomes damaged or missing, whether through a storm or old age, it can be a source of a leak very easily.

Brick and Mortar Damage

The third common cause of chimney leaks is cracked or damaged brick and mortar. When bricks or mortar are cracked, water can enter through the crevices. In colder weather, this water expands and leads to more cracking. This opens your chimney up to leaks, and further water damage.
