Being engaged members of our local communities is a core part of our mission. To do this, we allocate a percentage of each branch’s profit every year to fund the Cenvar Roofing Giving Back initiative. This process allows the General Manager of each branch to identify needs and serve the local community in the ways that they see fit. Each need looks different, but our commitment to serving our neighbors remains the same. Learn about some of our recent giving back projects below.
In March 2020 we helped sponsor a giveaway for a new roof. Members of the Lynchburg community were encouraged to nominate friends and neighbors who were in need of a new roof, and share their story with the community. The winner was selected through a community voting process.
At the time, Eugene and Carolyn King, a retired truck driver and retired nurse, were raising two of their great-grandchildren. Their next door neighbors nominated them because they felt they truly deserved a gift from the community. Unfortunately the King family was not voted the recipient, and Eugene went back to patching the leaks with shingles and hoping for the best as the roof continued to deteriorate.
However, the King family made a distinct impression on Holton Walker, the General Manager of the Lynchburg branch of Cenvar Roofing, and he thought of them often. Every time he drove past their house, he noticed how clearly they needed a new roof.
In March 2021, the neighbors who nominated the King family needed a new roof on their home, and called Cenvar Roofing. When Holton drove out to the home to assess the project, he saw the opportunity meet a need in his community by using some of the Giving Back funds to replace the King family’s roof free of charge.
When she found out about Holton’s offer, Carolyn was ecstatic: “it was a total, beautiful surprise,” said Carolyn, “the roof was in such terrible shape, it really was a miracle to us.”
In 2020 we partnered with Foster Fuels, Wooldridge Heating and Air and No Roof Left Behind to give away another new roof to a member of our local community. The winner of the giveaway was Charles Rucker. Mr. Rucker had been the sole caregiver for his wife of 47 years as she navigated multiple health issues. Just before the contest, she was admitted into a rehabilitation facility after a leg amputation, and due to Covid, Mr. Rucker was unable to visit her.
The Ruckers’ roof was missing shingles and leaking in multiple places including the kitchen, which made cooking very difficult. Due to the family’s financial situation, they were unable to afford the cost of a new roof. When Mr. Rucker found out that he was the recipient of a brand new roof, he was speechless. “Y’all brought joy back to me” said Mr. Rucker.
In 2019, we partnered with Foster Fuels, Wooldridge Heating and Air and No Roof Left Behind to give away a new roof and other prizes to a member of our local community. We had over 100 nominations submitted by community members, each telling stories about individuals who they thought deserved a new roof.
Once we selected the four finalists, the community voted to determine the winner. When the voting period ended, veteran and well known community member Tracy Bryant was the winner. Mr. Bryant was battling a rare form of cancer, and had no means to pay for a new roof, air conditioning, or upgrades to his heating system. He was amazed by the kindness of Cenvar Roofing, our partners, and the entire community showed to him throughout the process.
